Tasers and Stun Guns-What Is The Difference?
I remember back a few years ago there was an incident involving a University student who was dragged out of a lecture screaming “don’t tase me bro.” The reason I remember so well is because of course that is my business and the other reason is the cops were only about arm’s length away. Why is this important?
To me it highlights the confusion between the two stun guns and tasers. They are both considered stun devices by law enforcers. That is about where the similarity ends.
Here is how they are different.
1.Price-Stun guns start at $22.00 and go up to $90.00. The least expensive taser is $299.00 for a C2. The new X26c is $999.00. Police models are more expensive.
2.Effectiveness-Stun guns have a great 86% effectiveness rating. Tasers have an effectiveness rating of close to 100% with as much if not more stopping power than a 9mm hand gun.
3.How They Work-Stun guns use high voltage and low amperage in the 7-14 watt range to temporarily disable an attacker for 3-10 minutes. Stun guns must be applied to the assailant. They overload the muscular system causing it to over work thus depleting blood sugars needed for energy.
Tasers use EMD (electro muscular disruption) and a more powerful 16 - 26 Watt electrical signal to override the central nervous system and directly control the skeletal muscles. This EMD effect causes an uncontrollable contraction of the muscle tissue debilitating a target regardless of pain tolerance or mental focus.
4.Legal Requirements-You can buy a stun gun and use it in any state where they are legal. Tasers require a background check before they can be activated. If you have a felony in your background you may want to avoid spending the bucks getting one.
So there are the major differences between tasers and stun guns. If your life is in the balance and you can afford a taser nothing is better. When are you getting one?
